RAYNAUD PHENOMENON

Raynaud's disease causes the small arteries and arterioles, mainly in the toes and fingers, to go into spasms. This phenomenon causes the skin to become patchy red,  blue or pale.

In most cases, this disease affects young women and it is believed to be caused by its association with scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, a decrease in thyroid activity, injury, reaction to some drugs or nerve disorders.

The arterial spasms appear to be caused by cues that stimulate the sympathetic nervous system such as cold temperature or abrupt changes in emotional feelings. Spasms appear quickly and may last for minutes or even hours. In most cases physicians treat this episodes with mild sedatives and advise the patient to protect his arms, legs, and trunk from cold. Acrocyanosis causes a painless blueness in both hands due to the  spasms of the small blood vessels of the skin.

Drugs are prescribed to cause vase dilatation of the arteries although. Raynaud's phenomenon (RP)  is frequently a clinical feature associated to a cardio/microvascular involvement and is a key feature of several autoimmune rheumatic diseases. Moreover, RP is highly associated with coronary diseases

Nailfold Capillaroscopy is used by some doctors. A drop of oil is put on the nailfolds and then looked at under a magnifying glass to see whether there are changes in the capillaries which are indicative of connective tissue disease.

Capillaroscopy. Capillaroscopy is the most reliable way to distinguish between primary and secondary Raynaud's phenomenon through identification of an early pattern of systemic sclerosis. (PubMed) M. Cutolo. Best Pract Res Clin Rheumatol. Dec 2008. (Also see: Capillarscopy)
